Ruben van Veen
Ruben van Veen (1960) creates drawings and paintings using a figurative, intuitive approach in which the subconscious plays a key role in the creative process. He begins a drawing without a preconceived plan; inevitably, a human figure, an animal, a piece of fruit, or an everyday object emerges. This combination of images offers a glimpse into a bizarre world. His work centers on the human figure and the complex relationships between people, exploring themes of desire, fear, and the fine line between attraction and repulsion, harmony and conflict, tenderness and struggle.
With a touch of irony, he attempts to visualize the enigmatic nature of life while pursuing an ever-changing ideal of beauty.
Ruben van Veen studied drawing and painting at the Volksuniversiteit in Gouda and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and has been exhibiting his work since 1992. In 2016, the art book Ruben van Veen / Tekeningen Schilderijen Kartonnen* was published.
